Which thumbnail sizes exist?
YouTube keeps several: maxres (1280×720), sd (640×480), hq (480×360), mq (320×180), and default (120×90). Older or low-resolution uploads may not have the larger sizes.
Can I use someone else’s thumbnail?
Thumbnails are the creator’s content. Downloading to reference or mock up is one thing; publishing them as your own is a copyright issue.
Why is maxres sometimes missing?
maxres only exists when YouTube generated a 1280×720 frame. Older or low-resolution uploads may top out at sd or hq, so take the largest size the video actually has.
